Lift Preliminary Project

Scope of mechanical and electrical lift preliminary projects and the principles to follow

Contact

A lift preliminary project is the initial project, prepared together with the architectural project, that defines the basic characteristics of a lift to be installed in a building, such as capacity, speed, control and type of use. The conditions defined in the preliminary project form the basis of the lift application project prepared later.

What Is a Lift Preliminary Project?

A lift preliminary project is prepared to define the basic characteristics of a lift to be installed in a building, such as capacity, speed, control and type of use, according to its intended purpose. It is divided into two parts: the mechanical and the electrical preliminary project.

What Is a Mechanical Lift Preliminary Project?

A mechanical lift preliminary project is prepared to define the basic characteristics of a lift to be installed in a building, such as capacity, speed, control and type of use, according to its intended purpose.

What Is an Electrical Lift Preliminary Project?

An electrical lift preliminary project is prepared to define the basic characteristics of a lift to be installed in a building, such as capacity, speed and type of use, according to its intended purpose.

What Should a Mechanical Preliminary Project Contain?

  1. The cover of the lift preliminary project contains information on the building owner or their representative, the member who prepared the project and the location of the building; the number of lifts, the drive type of the lift, class, capacity, number of stops, travel, speed, car dimensions, the location of the machine room and motor power.
  2. The calculations of the lift preliminary project include the building traffic calculation and assessment (selection of capacity and number of lifts), the calculation of the loads on the building, the motor power calculation and, where applicable, the shaft pressurisation calculation.
  3. The drawings of the lift preliminary project include horizontal and vertical sections of the lift shaft, horizontal and vertical sections of the machine room, the machine room layout plan and any other detail features.

What Should an Electrical Preliminary Project Contain?

An electrical lift preliminary project includes the building traffic calculation, the motor power calculation, voltage drop calculations, cable cross-section calculations, the lighting plan of the lift machine room and shaft, the power supply line of the lift control panel, the lighting intensity calculation for the machine room and shaft, protection and earthing systems, the machine room layout plan, the shaft layout plan and the longitudinal section of the lift shaft. The machine room, the lift shaft lighting and socket circuits, and the lift power panel of the machine/motor group are supplied by riser lines separate from the building’s main distribution board. The earthing line of the lift power panel is run separately from the building’s equipotential busbar.

Principles to Follow in a Lift Preliminary Project

  • The Turkish Lifts Regulation states that “lift preliminary projects shall be prepared together with the architectural project and shall form the basis of the architectural project”. The lift preliminary project and the architectural project must be consistent with each other.
  • The shaft dimensions, pit depth and machine room dimensions used in the lift preliminary project must be consistent with the architectural project.
  • In the lift preliminary project, a traffic calculation is made in accordance with the architectural project and suited to the characteristics and conditions of use of the building. In the traffic calculation, the number of people in the building is calculated by counting two people for each bedroom and one person for each other room.
  • The vertical force on the guide rails caused by the operation of the safety gear, the safety gear and buffer impact forces on the pit floor, and the forces acting on the concrete above the shaft must be calculated.
  • The lift motor power must be calculated.
  • The car must be designed according to the number of people resulting from the traffic calculation.
  • According to the number of persons of the lift selected from the traffic calculation, the shaft and car dimensions must comply with the dimensions given in EN 81-1 or EN 81-2 (now EN 81-20 and EN 81-50).
  • A horizontal section of the lift shaft must be drawn, defining the shaft dimensions, car dimensions, counterweight, guide rails, and car and landing doors.
  • A section must be drawn showing the forces P1 and P2 on the pit floor and the forces Pk and Pr on the rails.
  • Front and side sections of the shaft must be drawn showing the pit and headroom dimensions, the floor heights, the car and door heights and the machine room.
  • The machine room must be drawn. The machine room must have at least two ventilation windows, the machine room door must open outwards, and, according to the fire regulation, there must be a smoke vent running from the shaft up to the roof with an area of 0.025 times the shaft area and at least 0.01 m². It should be recommended that at least two sides of the lift bedplate concrete are open. No installation lines other than those related to the lift should pass through the machine room.
  • A section must be drawn showing the rope holes and their dimensions on the platform where the motor will be placed.
